Joe Mullen is an award-winning weight-lifter, fitness trainer, and high-tech exercise pioneer with 50 years of experience in personal fitness training and physical therapy.
Early Years
At 10 years of age, Joe became interested in weight training, and began exercising with barbells and dumbbells. By the time he reached 15 years of age in 1952 he was an active member of a competitive YMCA Olympic weight-lifting team in Scranton, Pa.
Nautilus
Beginning in 1970, after 20 years of experience designing exercise programs with free weights, he became an original pioneer of the high-tech exercise boom, helping pioneer Nautilus exercise equipment and advanced exercise concepts by founding the first successful Nautilus fitness center established in New England, eventually operating 3 centers that used nothing but Nautilus or MedX equipment…never Free Weights.
In the 1980s, as a staff member at the Headquarters of Nautilus Sports Medical Industries and The Nautilus Television Network in DeLand, FL., he helped establish Nautilus exercise equipment and exercise concepts worldwide. His duties included Producer of television programming, featured speaker at International seminars, media marketing, writing for Nautilus magazine, supervisor of corporate fitness programs, and exercise research and consulting to fitness and medical professionals throughout America.
Fitness Therapy
Beginning in 1990, he was hired as the Regional Director of Northern California for the MedX West Corporation, a leading physical therapy testing, and rehabilitation equipment corporation. He founded its showroom in Santa Rosa, California, and established the Healthy Back physical therapy health center. In addition, he established the first Fitness Therapy medical clinic. The National Fitness Trade Journal featured the Fitness Therapy concept in the winter 1995 issue as a breakthrough fitness training system.
Author
Joe has authored 13 books, and published numerous newspaper and national magazine articles, including articles in Fitness Management, Nautilus Magazine, California Chiropractic, Iron Man, Muscle Training Illustrated, American Bodybuilder and Pump. In addition, he featured appearances on over 200 radio and television programs as a consumer advocate with backgrounds in the fields of fitness, proactive physical therapy, back to work physical conditioning and improved sports performance.

Joe is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine; Certified by the University of Florida as a MedX Technician; Certified Apex Fitness and Nutritional Professional; and 2nd degree Reiki Practitioner, among others.
Joe is a former National Bodybuilding Judge of I.F.B.B (International Federation of Bodybuilders), A.A.U., (Amateur Athletic Union), which was the governing associations for men and women’s Physique competition, Olympic lifting, Power Lifting, and Arm Wrestling.
Joe has been Awarded the titles of: Western Massachusetts Olympic Lifting Champion (two years in succession); Massachusetts Olympic Lifting Champion; New England’s Strongest Man; East Coast’s Strongest Man and New England Arm Wrestling Champion.
Joe is a Veteran of the United States Air Force.
